The eczema itch-scratch cycle: Inflammation leads to an Itch, which causes skin Damage, leading back to more Inflammation.

7 Surprising Eczema Triggers Hiding in Your Home (and What to Use Instead)

If your eczema keeps flaring and you don’t know why… it might not be your skincare.

As a pharmacist, I see this often:

Hidden triggers in your environment can be keeping your skin inflamed.

Why Triggers Matter

Eczema is driven by inflammation.
Anything that irritates your skin can restart the cycle:

Inflammation → Itch → Damage → More inflammation (cycle restarts)

7 Common Hidden Triggers

1. Fragrance in Products
Found in lotions, soaps, detergents are a major cause of irritation and don't do anything functional for the benefit of skin barrier. Has more research comes out, a lot of people are considering these items as toxic and carcinogens.

Swap for: fragrance-free products

2. Laundry Detergent

Residue on clothes can irritate skin, make a swap for: hypoallergenic detergents. Also reduce the amount of detergent used, a lot of people use more than needed for their laundry loads, not only is this more cost-effective, but it will save you from the stress of skin flares.

3. Hot Showers

Strips natural oils → worsens dryness

Swap for lukewarm or even tepid water as this effects your natural skin biome and weakens your skin barrier.

4. Harsh Soaps

Foaming cleansers can damage barrier. Swap for: gentle, non-stripping cleansers.

5. Synthetic Fabrics

Can trap heat and irritate skin. Swap for: cotton or breathable fabrics. Another thing that most caretakers of people with sensitive skin are not thinking about. Just because it is sustainable does not mean that it is good for dry skin.

6. Stress

Triggers inflammatory responses, stress management matters just as much as products and a routine without this is unfortunately bound to suffer.

7. Over-Exfoliation

One of the most overlooked triggers. Exfoliation is a wonderful tool in getting the skin back to glowing and back to normal after flares occur, but they must be done with care. Too much (frequency or strength) or too early can cause harm to delicate skin.

What Guidelines Say

The American Academy of Dermatology emphasizes that:

Barrier protection
Moisturization
Avoiding irritants

…are key components of eczema management. Your regimen and routine has to build upon that for successful results.
